Literature Text
And, at the dawn of a new day,
Feet that have never known a moment of war
Fly over hardwood that is no longer charred
To the room of a young lady who only
Had a full night’s sleep last night,
Not three years of slumber,
And he will tell her he loves her,
And that he’s glad she’s finally woken up,
Without knowing just what he means.
Husband and wife will wake with
Tears in their eyes and hands
Tightly knotted,
Will tell each other they missed
The other half of their soul,
Though they have never spent a day apart,
But it feels like it’s been years since
They’ve seen each other’s faces.
A lonely young lady will wander out
Into the garden to start a chat with
The young man she thinks she dreamt
Holding her at knifepoint, pinning her down
With dagger eyes and needle teeth
But acts like a complete gentleman now,
Even offers her a freshly cut rose
For her time—no one has ever
Come out to speak to him
In the morning before.
A queen gives a patient smile as she
Listens to her subject’s problems and
Worries, forms a thoughtful answer to each
And her king sits next to her and smiles
As well, because, oddly enough, he can’t
Seem to remember the last time he saw her smile
Like that, though he can’t ever remember a time
When she did not smile like that, either.
And a young warrior who has
Never once truly fought a day in her
Life sits across the kitchen table from
Her older brother, wondering why she just
Can’t stop thinking of Basil, though she
Has no idea who that is, and her brother
Can’t help but marvel at how the world suddenly
Feels balanced again, and wonder when
It is his princess will return to him,
Dragging her other knight behind her.
They all hope it will be soon.
